The Sprunging of Spring

Spring is in the air, as it was a deliciously balmy 44 degrees Fahrenheit this morning. I didn’t even wear a hat or gloves on my run. In fact, I rolled up my sleeves. Incredible. Especially after this past winter. If you ran outside anywhere within the continental U.S. or Alaska (sorry, Hawaii) at any point during these past few months, you know what I’m talking about.

Maybe every winter is the same, and we tend to think “this past” winter has always been particularly terrible. But I think maybe this one was? We had a few long stretches of single digit temps and approximately 18 snowpacalypses. Frankly, I’m exhausted. Bring on the flowers and the sun and the rolled up sleeves. And for the love of all that is holy: no more snow.

Snow is only exciting pre-Christmas, when the promise of holiday cheer and eating and gatherings and eating and time off from work and also eating is close enough to smell. Only then is snow “fun.” January, not so much. By February, I can’t wait for winter to be over. By March, I begin to wonder if this is just how life will be from here on out, the climate at a forever standstill because for all we know perhaps Earth itself has ceased its revolution around the sun, allowing the seasons to become permanent fixtures on this dying planet, a mere miniscule lump of rock at a random spot inside a vast, infinite universe where life will never change until the day we die, at which point, whether we like it or not, we will enter into a final, frigid state for all of eternity.

Once April rolls around, I’m usually starting to feel a little better.

I was tired this morning. I know I’ve written this before so I hope I don’t sound like a broken record (note to anyone under 21: a “record” is like an album on iTunes, only stored on a big flat disc that a needle touches as it spins, look, just google it) but I typically get between 5 and 6 hours of sleep a night during the week. Closer to 6, I’m good. The closer I get to 5, the harder it is to keep my eyes open while I read on the train, the sole reason I don’t finish books faster than I do.

Last night, I got 5.

This is the main reason I need to move back to the city. Otherwise, the alternatives are either to not run at all (LOL) or to get to bed earlier, which is almost always impossible given the time I get home. I suppose I could quit my job, but then there’s the pesky issue of my bank telling me that I don’t have any money to pay for stuff, which really wouldn’t work out in anyone’s favor.

So I am sucking it up for now, the only real option there is. Please know that I consider myself very lucky that this is my big “problem” these days.

I can also tell I’m tired because this post feels very rambly. I did not begin this with a theme in mind, or even a point I wanted to make, which is usually the least I do when I start writing these posts. At the moment, my train is approaching Jamaica station, which usually means I want to wrap this up soon and close my eyes for a little bit until we pull into Penn Station. I will probably do that.

In personal news, my sister Jaaron is arriving today from Texas to visit for a few days. So that’ll be nice. My dad is taking us all out for Japanese food this weekend, and if you think I’ve already looked at the restaurant’s menu online, googled pictures of what various dishes look like, and decided what to order, then you know me well.

Oh, my run this morning was nice. A solid 5.6 miles in just under 54 minutes, the same route I did on Sunday. Although I was tired, I got through it. Which is all I can ever ask.
