‘Twas the Run Before Christmas

‘Twas the Run Before Christmas

This morning I ran a good old 10 miles on my good old route around good old Northport.

I love running on weekends because not only can I run after the sun is up, I don’t have to rush to catch a train. It’s so leisurely. It’s also Christmas Eve, and I honestly love running on or close to holidays when hardly anyone is out driving. Christmas is not only my favorite holiday, it’s my favorite day to run. In fact, I only did 10 miles today – instead of going longer than last week’s 12 – so I’d have some energy left to run tomorrow.

I also want to run tomorrow because I plan on eating all of the calories.

Another reason I thought I’d do 10 is I’ve been looking at some marathon training plans lately, and I’ve seen that some of them recommend upping mileage on the long runs only every other week. So maybe I’ll try that for a little while.

Oh yeah, I plan on running a marathon in 2018. More on that when it’s definite!

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the fastest of them all? …Shalane Flanagan, you say? Yes, makes sense.

This morning’s run was great – in the lower 30s, a little sun, no snow left on the ground. I revamped my 90s playlist last night so I had some new music to listen to. One of these days I need to write a post about music, because it’s such an important part of my running. I’ve thought about ending each post with a “song of the day.” Would that be fun? Maybe I’ll start that today.

I ate a Clif Blok before I headed out, then one in mile 4 and one in mile 7, and I felt great. I can feel the difference – it’s just a little bit of an energy boost. I also managed to sleep about six and a half hours, which was a Christmas Eve miracle. I think these all contributed to my 9:25 pace. Pretty good for an old broad like me.

After I ate and showered, I decided to take a Christmas pic with the dogs. It was supposed to be corny and silly, but it kind of turned out good??? I had a hard time posing the dogs just so and managing to situate myself in time (I really need to get a remote for my camera), so this is the best one I got. Threw it in Photoshop and voila! My very own digital Christmas card.

I hope everyone is where they need to be for Christmas Eve, but if not, safe and happy travels today. And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, have a safe and happy day regardless.

Here’s my Good Running Song of the Day: “Violet” by Hole. At least one of my playlists always has to have this on it. It’s such a good ass kicker.

  1. Your dogs are adorable! Congrats on the marathon in 2018. If you can run 10 on a Christmas Eve, you are ready to start training. You will notice that plans don’t only switch back and forth between longer and shorter but also work in blocks called periodization. It is a slow build toward longer running. My husband likens it to climbing Everest and needed to stop to acclimate at different points. Definitely look at plans and find the one that is best for you. Marathon training is so fun. I can’t wait to follow your journey!
